Maleme Village in Chahia

Maleme is a holiday resort, a seaside village, with lots of hotels, apartments, beach bars, traditional taverns and restaurants, between Kolymbari and Chania and just 2km away from the busy touristic center of Platanias.

Maleme village is widely known for its historical airport, from which the german parachute soldiers tried to reach the cretan land on May 1941, during the Battle of Crete on the Second World War. Strategically, Maleme airport was the most important target for the German conquerors, because it would be easier for them to invade the island. But they didn’t expect the brave resistance of the Cretans! The result of that Battle is the death of 4.465 german soldiers, most of them around 20 years old, that now rest in peace at the beautiful German Cemetery of Maleme, in the hill 107 above the airport. The German Cemetery is a famous attraction, a peaceful place, that reminds to the visitors, the awfulness and horror of war.

Nowdays, Maleme is a pretty known touristic destination, a developing holiday resort, close to Chania historical town, that makes it a very good choice for a relaxing holiday.
